Japan’s latest reserves data appears steady on the surface, but the calendar may hide the real story.

Official figures for the end of April showed Japan’s foreign currency reserves were largely unchanged from the previous month. That stability matters because markets have watched closely for signs that authorities stepped in to support the yen. Reports indicate any intervention likely came so close to month-end that the April snapshot failed to capture its full effect.

The data may say little about intervention itself and more about timing: if officials acted at the end of April, the reserves tally may simply have arrived too soon.

That timing issue leaves investors and policymakers reading between the lines. Foreign currency reserves often offer one of the clearest official clues about whether authorities sold dollars or deployed other assets to influence the exchange rate.
